#FirstImpressions part 4 - CounterSide

Well if this isn't awkward...How long ago did I write part 3 of this little series I did? A3 still was out by then...No matter, it was fun doing it so time to bring it back to life. This time hopefully better in quality.

For my next victim I chose a game that was saved on my wishlist for quite some time but I never craved to play ot that much. That's before I saw some edit on TikTok. Of a character I basically fell in love with lol. Without further ado I present you CounterSide.

While the Administration Failure led to Corrupted Objects threatening the very existence of humanity, A chosen few known as the Counters fight against these Corrupted Objects to drive them back to the void. Now, the ceased clock starts to tick once more.

While I'm just at the beginning, having finished first act of the story and so can't say much about the plot, I'm quite curious how things will turn out. The Player as a character in the story is certainly interesting and gives me vibes of a silent schemer. The pacing in the first act also didn't seem bad though I could be more invested in the story.

On the other side, while I didn't get to know many characters yet I must say I quite like them. The cast seems to be quite colorful in terms of personality and Joo Shiyoon grabbed my heart from the moment I saw him on TikTok. There's just something to this fox-eyed boy. The designs and artstyle are also both really nice. I like how many of the characters look, especially Shena with her cool violin weapon. The designs are quite simple but they give just enough personality to the characters which I appreciate.

I must say the gameplay while not something I would usually go for, is quite enjoyable though I have hard time keeping up with everything that happens on the screen. Menu was also at first a bit confusing for me but I'm getting better at understanding where everything is. On the other side, I basically had no problem with the system of character building. It's quite clear and not complicated.

Can't forget about the gacha system in CounterSide, as for many it would be the most important part. Maybe it's usual in the beginning or I started the game at a good time but it gave me quite a lot free rolls which allowed me to get a full team of SSR characters (+ Joo Shiyoon) from the start. And while of course it has money grabbing methods it looks like it may be f2p friendly? I don't want to judge yet since I had not much experience with the recruit system in CounterSide.

All in all, I got hooked and CounterSide will stay on my phone for some time. And I will work on getting Joo Shiyoon loyalty to 100 and becoming life time partners. Seo out!

as we enter the start of a semester and the dreaded Hour of Making Friends us upon us... if ur ever at a loss for what to say in one of those weird social situations where you only vaguely-know people, one of my favorite questions to ask is "what is your favorite food crime." a food crime is like the food combination that you love that other people find revolting. press them to take it further than pineapple on pizza, that's rote. food crimes is a good topic that has many benefits as it turns out all people are degenerates and also it will give you some cool ideas to try out later in the privacy of your own degenerate kitchen

the other good thing to ask is "okay but has anyone here ever been someplace haunted" bc it turns out if you ask most people directly they don't believe in ghosts, but many people are like "oh yeah i lived in a haunted house. ghosts aren't real tho"

Steve had always wanted a dog. He wanted to cuddle on the couch, tug of war with old socks, and play catch in the yard. Most of all, he wanted a friend that would love him unconditionally.

So when he and Eddie got their first rundown house on the edge of Hawkins, he wanted to get a dog. They had a yard, savings in the bank, and plenty of time to spare between Eddie’s gigs and Steve’s school. He wanted a dog.

Eddie, though, wanted a cat. He was never a huge dog-lover. He didn’t really like the way dogs seemed so attached to their humans, they were too needy. He wanted a cat that kept to itself 23 hours of the day before finding its favorite person for minimal scritches and pets before disappearing once again to be a cat.

They were at an impasse. Neither one was backing down and after a two day silence streak, they reached a compromise. They would get a dog. Eddie could be reasoned with on the condition that they got a golden retriever because if he got a dog, you better believe it was going to be Steve’s twin.

With his acceptance, Steve brought home a puppy and named her Cinnamon. In a need to wreak havoc however, Eddie called her Van Halen and she only ever answered to that.

Years later when Van Halen was fully trained, Steve got his revenge. Eddie brought home a cat named Ozzy and Steve saw his chance. He called her exclusively Cuddlebug and from then on, she only answered to that.

It was so much worth it, seeing the grimace and full-body sigh Eddie took whenever he called her name. He learned the hard way that Steve holds a mean grudge (and usually gets payback in unexpected ways).

So the recent Nanahara Alliance event has made me realize that I love villains who were once completely pure or kind only for a tragic event to 180 their entire personality or even their whole worldview

They could've just made Orochi a generic bloodthirsty mythical monster, especially since her source material was already that, but they didn't. They made her a guardian of humanity that cherished her priestess so much that the cruel betrayal of that priestess for the sake of others' greed completely changed her. What's extra interesting is that it's not just a simple, "I want revenge for that day." From what I'm getting from her dialogue, she still recognizes humanity's capacity for innocence and kindness - which is why she wants to kill them while they're still in that state, before they either fall to temptation or are betrayed by those who fall. She wasn't just enraged by that day in her past, but her ideals also so twisted but still making sense for her original self.

It's so fascinating to see these types of villains in stories. For one, it reminds the viewer that pure evil is not the only way one become a villain, and that even those who seem innocent now can be become corrupted by anything. And in the case of them going at odds with protagonists with the same motivations and beliefs that the villain once had, I can think of a few different questions that add to the tension: What if the heroes end up like the villain? What if the villain bonds with and is changed by the heroes, only for the heroes to be betrayed? Would the villain spiral again like in the past?

Also as a side note: I also really like Minato's motivation throughout the storyline. I think it's more realistic and relatable - we don't just want to protect our loved ones, but we also want a safe future for ourselves to just live without worrying about conflict and heroics (even if we don't always actively think about it).
